August 2016 Pictures

Some of this is almost 4′ tall and it’s not things I want. 😒 I never knew how tall our yard could get if we never mowed all summer. I’m finding out right now.

To do list has been created. It’s mostly things I want to add and transplant to the prairie.

Swallowtail Larva

Away from the Pocket Prairie, in another part of my yard, I am growing Rue. It’s an interesting plant by itself, it grows in the Poison Garden at Blarney Castle and can cause skin reactions similar to poison ivy. I haven’t searched yet to confirm but I suspect that’s why the Swallowtails use it as a host plant. Eating it will make them poisonous to predators. I’ll let you know if I get around to searching for more info. Anyway, the reason I planted Rue was to attract swallowtails. It’s worked! So here’s a whole post just to share some pictures with you! Lol

Look closely and you’ll see them in several sizes. The smallest I spotted was about 1/4″ long. Sooo teeny!
